Spread Betting Preview
This Sunday brings us the climax of the NFL season – Super Bowl XXXIX. If you're planning a late
night to see it through to the end, it's worth taking a look at the spread betting markets on
offer from
SportingIndex. We grabbed five minutes with their Senior NFL Market Maker
for his opinion on what's going to happen...
Wise Words
"Even though the Patriots' are playing with backup defensive backs, they match up very well
against the Eagles' offense. New England plays a very physical game which the Eagles' receivers
have struggled against previously. I expect to see the Patriots shutting them down efficiently.
Corey Dillon should certainly wear down their defensive line, as Tom Brady dinks and dunks his
way down the field as usual."
"Philadelphia will be looking to star Running Back Brian Westbrook to keep them in the game.
However, the Patriots' Linebackers are very quick and disciplined and the Eagles are not used to
playing against a 3-4 defense; he'll have a tougher time making plays coming out of the backfield.
Rumour has it he'll also return punts for the first time this season (he had the 2nd highest punt
return average last season) so his performance is critical. The Patriots will also have to line up
extra help opposite Eagles DE Jevon Kearse. If anyone can wreak havoc on the New England backfield,
he's the man who'll do it. He faced the Patriots last season when playing for the Titans, pulling
off four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble."
"I see this match starting off quite cagily and conservative, probably coming to life deep
in the second quarter and certainly for the second half. At that point we'll see some big plays
and the Patriots start to pull away. We're predicting they'll win by a margin of 6 to 8 points
and a total of 47 to 50 points in the match. Whatever happens, it's set to be an interesting
chess match; these two teams have the best coaching staffs in the League, so how they plan the
game and call the plays will really decide this SuperBowl."
What To Bet On?
SportingIndex is running a massive number of bets on the Super Bowl. At the time of
writing, the latest prices in a couple of the most popular markets are:
Supremacy: Patriots to beat the Eagles by 6 to 8 points
Total Points (by both teams): 47 to 50
ie: Sporting believe that the Patriots will beat the Eagles by a margin of between 6 and 8 points.
You have a simple choice to make now:
- Will the Patriots win by MORE than 8 points?
or
- Will the Patriots win by LESS than 6 points, or draw, or will the Eagles win?
It really is as easy as that. EG: If you think that the Patriots will hammer the Eagles, you would
"buy" (bet high) at 8 points, for a stake of say GBP5 per point. If the game finished up 38 – 20 to
the Patriots, then they would have won by a margin (or supremacy) of 18 points, so you would win
(18 – 8) x GBP5 = GBP50.
